Mental mechanics

In psychology, a schema refers to a mental framework or structure that helps individuals organise and interpret information about the world. In neuro linguistic programming this process is called filtering. In both cases, there is a process of organising and interpreting information based on past experiences, beliefs, and attitudes.

Schemas are essentially mental models that guide how individuals perceive, process, and recall information and are crucial cognitive structures that help us to make sense of the world and are shaped by our past experiences, beliefs, and attitudes. They can be helpful because they allow individuals to quickly process and make sense of new information. However, these mental frameworks can also limit our ability to perceive new information and can lead to cognitive biases, errors and stereotypes if they are too rigid or inflexible.

Let's say someone has a rigid schema for what a "good student" looks like. Their schema may include the belief that a good student always gets straight A's, is highly involved in extracurricular activities, and participates frequently in class. This person may overlook potential good students who don't fit this stereotype, such as students who struggle academically but work hard and show improvement, or students who may not be highly involved in extracurricular activities but excel in other areas such as music or art.

This rigid schema for what a "good student" looks like could lead to bias and unfair treatment of students who don't fit the stereotype. It's important to recognise and challenge these schemas to avoid cognitive biases and ensure fairness and equality in decision-making.

It's essential to acknowledge and understand our cognitive limitations; otherwise, we risk becoming prisoners of our own minds.

Achieving the State of Clarity course, teaches you to become more aware of our schemas and how they influence our perceptions and behaviors, so we can take steps to review and upgrade them.
